The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are set high in Ethiopia's highlands, about 701km (436mi) from Addis Ababa. Carved from solid volcanic rock in the 12th–13th centuries under King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela, these eleven churches were envisioned as a “new Jerusalem” for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. Still in active use, they remain a deeply sacred pilgrimage site and a remarkable feat of medieval architecture—a testament to Ethiopia's spiritual and cultural heritage.
